Sisterhood
Sisterhood // About Us
Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood affiliated with Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (WLCJ) over 90 years ago, in March of 1930. We have been an active part of the Shaarey Zedek family for nearly 100 years, and continue to be an integral part of the Synagogue.
The Sisterhood offers women of all ages the opportunity to come together to socialize, work on special projects and learn through programs such as the annual Interfaith Luncheon held in the spring of each year, the book club, the very popular tallit weaving program, Sisterhood Shabbat and a variety of social and educational programs.
Through our Torah Fund campaign, we raise money for and awareness of the institutions that train our clergy and lay leaders – the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem, the Seminario Rabbinico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires, and the Zecharias Frankel College in Potsdam.
Locally, we are proud to support Willow Place and Jewish Child & Family Services in addition to the Shaarey Zedek congregation.
The Sisterhood has made a number of donations to the synagogue over the years. These include: the chairs in the lounge area of the women’s washroom; the Life Lights pamphlets at the information centre at the rear entrance; siddurim and puppets for the Family Service; the re-silvering of a set of rimonim for one of the Torah scrolls; and the furnishings to transform the former Executive Director’s office into the new family room, where the funeral director can meet with mourners.
