Noam Millo, Catering Committee Chair

Over the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to hear from various board, executive and clergy members regarding our shared vision for a thriving Congregation Shaarey Zedek.

We are fortunate to have a vibrant and active community coming together for learning, worship and celebration. One important aspect of our community is the role that catering plays in our synagogue and community events. For this week’s message I am writing to you as Chair of the synagogue catering committee.

Catering is not just about providing quality kosher food at our events, but about creating an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality that makes everyone feel welcome. Whether we are gathering for a Kiddush lunch at the synagogue, a bar or bat mitzvah celebration, or a private event, the food and the way it is presented enhances the experience and brings us closer together. Catering also plays a practical role in our synagogue’s operations as the catering expenses and revenues are part of the synagogues annual budget.

As we are all aware, the past few years have been challenging for the catering industry. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation or postponement of a significant number of gatherings and events. Additional challenges including labor shortages and price inflation have emerged. As well, we are undergoing an extensive synagogue renovation during which time the catering operation has had to relocate to other facilities.

Despite all of these challenges our committee is optimistic that Shaarey Zedek catering will be able to flourish, despite the inherent challenges. The renovation relocation period has given us an opportunity to take a step back and reimagine what our kosher catering service could look like in a new and modernized event space. The relocation period has also presented unique opportunities for partnerships with local community organizations, with whom our board of directors is in active discussions. Additionally, we are working with Joel and his talented team to update our takeout menu so as to more broadly incorporate our rich and diverse culinary traditions and provide a convenient option to families for Shabbat and holiday meals.

I urge you to consider the importance of our catering service, and I want to thank you for your continued support!
